Overview

The Director of Design is responsible for overseeing design department team members, scheduling timeline, liaising with customers and ensuring productivity. The Director of Design uses discretion and independent judgement, within established policies and procedures, in selecting the methods utilized to achieve project goals. The Director of Design must be self-motivated with high energy and the ability to interact with numerous individuals, in multiple functions, in a dynamic and changing environment.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

  • Support sales efforts by participating in meetings with potential clients to discuss foodservice requirements and budget expectations as requested
  • Meet with client/ chefs to gain thorough understanding of menus, preparation methods, equipment requirements, etc. to facilitate preparation of Test Fit and Schematic Designs plans
  • Meet with sales, clients/ chefs to review Test Fit and Schematic Design plans and obtain sign-off prior to beginning Design Development plans
  • Provide Assistant Director of Design necessary information for a full understanding of the foodservice program necessary for preparation of foodservice plans
  • Support the management of workloads for CAD/REVIT operators assigned to the Design Department
  • Establish education and training goals for team members necessary to develop skill sets required to be effective and advance in their positions within Singer EVI
  • Review food service equipment plans and shop drawings to ensure project budget, design goals and Singer EVI standards have been met
  • Work with Assistant Director of Design to establish design standards within Singer EVI to include fabrication specification standards, standard page details and updating information as required or changed
  • Document changes during Test Fit and Schematic design phases requested by sales and customers, including generation of change orders as required
  • Support progress within Singer EVI to all operators utilizing REVIT
  • Establish and maintain relationships with fabricators, millwork specialists and other sub-contractors to create and support Singer EVI specifications
  • Attend project meetings as required.

 

LEAD OR SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Supervises Assistant Director of Design, who manages Design Department. Team members may also include, but not limited to, designers, quality assurance reviewers, and project coordinator functioning in administrative role.

Ideal Candidate Will Possess the Following Skills and Abilities

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

 

Experience: Minimum of 5 years of project management and leadership experience. Experience working with culinary management and staff to determine workflows, equipment requirements and problem-solving culinary issues.  Construction experience is desired. 

 

Competencies:

 

  • 3-5 years’ experience in food service equipment design;
  • 3-5 years’ experience in construction related to food service
  • Ability to utilize AutoCAD and/or REVIT
  • Ability to utilize computer-based programs necessary to complete assigned tasks, including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, AutoQuotes, and Wrike
  • Ability to measure and document field conditions using words, dimensions and sketches as required
  • Have excellent communication and partnership skills which are essential for interacting and communicating with key stakeholders at all levels across the company to manage, inform and influence positive outcomes
  • Possess leadership skills to oversee project management, strategic planning, relationship management, and development of opportunities
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and manage high performing teams.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to successfully work with others in the organization
  • Attention to detail; highest standards of accuracy and precision; highly organized
  • Exceptional work ethic with a focus on achieving goals and targets in a timely and complete manner
  • Highly driven and self-motivated; ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team
  • Basic knowledge of general construction, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing
  • Ability to read and understand manufacturers cut sheets, drawings and construction drawings and communicate layout and design requirements to others
  • Strong relationship building skills with customers, architects, and engineers
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to articulate recommendations in a concise and timely manner
  • Possess integrity and ethical character
  • Ability to think creatively, critically and solve problems
  • Flexible in schedule to enable the company to meet customer needs - overtime and weekends may be necessary and required

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work requires sitting for extended periods of time while operating a computer, standing, walking and moving throughout the office; requires driving and valid driver’s license; talking; seeing (specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus); hearing; feeling; bending or stooping; squatting or crouching; reaching; kneeling; pushing; pulling; lifting.  In addition, job site work may include walking or standing most of the time and requires frequent bending, stooping, and twisting (for example, taking field measurements).

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Typically works in office and telework environments. Must be effective at managing teleworkers.  The core hours of this position are 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. However, some evening and weekend hours may be required to meet business demands. Job may require work to be performed on active construction sites where employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, loud noise, odors and other hazards commonly found on construction sites.

 

TRAVEL

May require local and out-of-town travel in accordance with business needs.
